A Little Bit of Denver Pop Culture History

The first and still most significant find of pristine condition comic books was made in Denver in 1977. The collection was sold by the heirs who had inherited a house that was filled with "paper junk" and there was a closet full of comic books (consisting of almost 18,000 comic books.) The person who had purchased all the comics starting in the 1930s through the 1950s was a local artist by the name of Edgar Church. Edgar was a commercial artist with a nice design aesthetic and fantastic lettering. The comic books are now dispersed among many Comic Book collections, but examples of Edgar's work still can be found in Denver. These examples came from his personal scrapbook which was purchased many years ago by a friend of mine. The first piece of art is nice as it is signed by Edgar.

Next up is a nice example of his lettering for an auto parts supplier.

A slightly different design for a photo engraving company.

Finally a great example of both positive and negative lettering design.

His style looks like many of the 1960's Rock posters out of San Francisco.
For more information on the collection, read the story of the original find.
